The Birth of Pärna Art Residency
by Julia Akimova, The Founder of Pärna Art Residency
As I sit down to write this first blog post, I’m filled with an overwhelming sense of excitement and gratitude. The dream of founding Pärna Art Residency (PAR) has been a journey of passion, planning, and purpose. Today, I am thrilled to share the story of how this vision became a reality and why it means so much to me.
The idea for PAR was born out of my deep love for the arts and cultural heritage. Over the years, I’ve been inspired by the interplay of history, architecture, and human stories — elements that shape not just places but the very fabric of our identities. Ida-Virumaa, with its rich history and striking landscapes, felt like the perfect setting for a space where creativity and heritage could come together in meaningful ways.
From the beginning, I envisioned PAR as more than just a residency; I wanted it to be a sanctuary for artists, photographers, and writers seeking inspiration and connection.
The idea was to create a space where creativity could flourish, nurtured by the unique stories and culture of the region. It’s a place where artists can pause, reflect, and channel their perspectives into impactful works of art.
What excites me most is the opportunity to bring together a diverse community of creators. PAR is designed to be a collaborative space where participants can learn from one another, share ideas, and push the boundaries of their creative practices.
Launching PAR has also been a personal journey. From scouting the perfect location to designing programs that truly reflect the spirit of Ida-Virumaa, every step has been a labor of love.
As i prepare to welcome our first residents, I am eager to see how this space will evolve and grow. I’m looking forward to the stories, artwork, and friendships that will emerge from this shared experience. My hope is that every artist who comes to PAR leaves with not just an enriched portfolio but also a deeper connection to heritage, culture, and their own creative journey.
Thank you for being part of this exciting new chapter. Whether you’re an artist, a supporter, or simply curious about what i do, I invite you to follow along as we embark on this incredible adventure. Here’s to many inspiring moments ahead at Pärna Art Residency!
